Course Description:

RATIONALE
European Union law (EU law) governs the relations among member states of the European Union and the means by which economic, social and political integration are designed and enforced. This module examines the laws and principles that comprise EU law and determine implementation in member states. Students will consolidate their knowledge of the basic principles and sources introduced in their first year and acquire deeper knowledge of the function and purpose of law in the EU. Students will also deepen their knowledge of the mechanisms for law making and enforcement. The module covers the key aspects of EU law that have significant effect on social and economic activities – freedom of movement of people, goods and services, competition, and external relations. Students will also develop a sound understanding of the role of fundamental principles in EU law such as non-discrimination and equality. It will also cover the withdrawal process post-Brexit.

AIMS
Through the completion of this module students will:
●    Foster detailed understanding of the legal framework of EU law.
●    Facilitate examination of key concepts, aims and policies that have influenced the development of the EU law and its current application.
●    Develop critical evaluation and application of legal rules and provisions of EU law in specific contexts.
●    Critically examine the effects of the UK withdrawal from the EU.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
1.    Interpret and examine the sources and principles of EU law.
2.    Demonstrate critical awareness in the analysis of the legal order.
3.    Examine key concepts, aims and policies in the development and operation of EU Law.
4.    Evaluate and apply legal rules and provisions of EU law in specific contexts.
5.    Critically examine the effects of withdrawal from the EU.
